Call for Essential Patents
September 2007 Call for Essential Patents Does anyone know of any patents of which the chair should be made aware, the implementation of which is either technically or commercially essential for either mandatory or optional portions of the standard, and for which a letter of assurance has not been submitted? No notice of essential patents was made. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

September 2007 Why are we here? In 2004, the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying WLAN equipment to the “Wi-Fi Multimedia” (WMM) specification. WMM was drawn from an early draft of e WMM evolved independently from e WMM has derivative specs dependent on it, e.g. WMM U-APSD Most everything being sold with QoS capabilities is certified to WMM Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
13
Why are we here? In 2005, IEEE SA approved 802.11e
September 2007 Why are we here? In 2005, IEEE SA approved e 802.11e is a superset of WMM, with technical differences 802.11e is now incorporated in (the standard) All new amendments are made to the material in , e.g., n, r New amendments increasingly diverge from what is being built and certified Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
14
September 2007 Why are we here? It can’t be good for the industry to have to develop two specs for the same functionality One spec as the “official” standard, an amendment to One spec as the “unofficial” standard, an amendment to WMM We need to converge on a single specification that is acceptable to both IEEE and WFA Alignment of the two organizations is the best path for the industry Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
15
Areas not to be touched (from July session)
September 2007 Areas not to be touched (from July session) Anything not in the scope of WMM, e.g., HCCA Anything 11n is referencing, built on DLS 4 transmit queues Per channel access QD2 (PICS) Advertisement (capabilities), preserving the structure Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
16
Areas to be addressed (from July session)
September 2007 Areas to be addressed (from July session) 07/1986r0 – Comparison of e and WMM Areas in conflict between the two specs – in detail Block ACK Aggregation Backward compatibility with WMM 1.1 U-APSD and the More Data bit U-APSD behavior Admission control Sequence numbering Information elements Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
17
Straw Poll (from July session)
September 2007 Straw Poll (from July session) Scope statement format 15: Only specific areas to be addressed 4: Only specific areas not to be addressed 15: Specific areas to be addressed and specific areas not to be addressed 7: Specific areas to be addressed and a general statement to include experience gained in WMM (with derivatives) 7: Specific areas to be addressed and specific areas not to be addressed, plus a general statement to include experience gained in WMM (with derivatives) 25 individuals voting Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
18
September 2007 Scope Straw Man This amendment incorporates some functionality from the Quality of Service specification developed as the Wi-Fi Alliance Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) specification version 1.1 into the standard. This amendment does not deprecate any operational mode or feature introduced in e-2005 (or affect the compliance of devices adhering to e-2005). It is specifically limited to incorporating functionality addressed in the WMM specification and the specification of behavior that is required to define operation with this new functionality. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
19
Additional Information Section
September 2007 Additional Information Section Intent is to not necessarily incorporate all of the WMM specification. Intent is to not deprecate existing functionality incorporated in e. is not allowed to invalidate existing device compliance with e and will not deprecate any operational mode or feature introduced in e-2005. Deprecate is understood to mean that functionality is not part of the standard, might continue to be described in a standard for backward compatibility, and its further use is discouraged. Deprecation is effectively removing something from the standard. Specific areas addressed are differences in all information elements, unscheduled automatic power save delivery (U-APSD), sequence numbering, and admission control. This amendment does not address the hybrid coordinated channel access (HCCA), extended distributed channel access (EDCA), or direct link setup. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems

September 2007 Straw Poll Should we continue to develop a PAR and 5C related to the integration of WMM into ? Yes: 21 No: 8 Abstain: 3 Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
21
Note to second straw poll
September 2007 Note to second straw poll It is possible that persons of like affiliation vote in a similar fashion because their individual positions on the issue coincide and not necessarily because they share an affiliation. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
22
Straw poll by affiliation
September 2007 Straw poll by affiliation Should we continue to develop a PAR and 5C related to the integration of WMM into ? Yes: 17 No: 3 Abstain: 5 This poll is taken by affiliation to attempt to ascertain if there is any domination of the process. This was requested by the chair. The chair determines that the results are inconclusive. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
23
September 2007 Motion Moved: the Study Group recommend to the Working group that the working group conduct an electronic ballot on the acceptability of the PAR and Five Criteria that was approved by the Study Group in the May 2007 meeting (document ). The Study Group would intend to resolve any comments received on the ballot with the goal of producing a revised PAR and Five Criteria during the November session. Moved: Andrew Myles/Menzo Wentink Chair rules that this is a procedural matter and not a motion. Poll: 13/12/5 (procedural) Chair rules that the recommendation will be forwarded to the working group, based on the poll of those present. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
24
September 2007 Point of Order The LMSC P&P do not allow a letter ballot to be conducted by a study group or by a working group on behalf of a study group. Ruling: the motion is not out of order, as the LMSC P&P are silent on the issue of conducting business in the working group by electronic means, other than the decision to forward a draft. Bob O'Hara, Cisco Systems
