2. You must use a lead-in for every quote in your Essay
So what’s a lead-in?
A lead in is a sentence starter that LEADS IN to a quote by beginning with YOUR OWN ORIGINAL WORDS FIRST.
Example:
Elie worries about his Father’s health but has to march anyway: “Left, right! His father had remained…leaning against the wall” (Wiesel 75).

3. Directions Now lets look at 3 ways to write lead-in!
You will need to use lead ins for every quote in your essay!

4. The “somebody says” Lead-in
After discovering that he has been selected to die, Elie’s father says, “It’s not certain yet. There’s still a chance” (Weisel 74).
Who states the quote in the bio?
But who do you cite at the end?

5. The Use-a-Complete-Sentence Lead-in
Elie’s father is selected to die but still clings to hope of survival: “It’s not certain yet. There’s still a chance” (Wiesel 74).
We don’t know who says it, but the quote can stand on its own and still make sense
Where is the period?

6. The Roll it into your Sentence Lead-in
Elie’s father believes that “there’s still a chance” he will survive even after he is selected to die (Wiesel 74).
You don’t have to use the whole quote; you can use the parts that make your paragraph make sense.
Make sure you use quotation marks around direct quotes.

7. The Paraphrase
Even if you don’t use a quote but rather an event or example of characterization, you must still give credit to the author.
Examples:
Elie must learn how to survive without his family (Weisel).
In the novel, Night, Elie must learn how to survive with his wits about him.
Elie Weisel tells a story about his survival in his memoir, Night.

8. DON’T LOSE THESE NOTES!!!
Start working on your rough draft using the paper provided.
Make sure to write the correct heading and cite all of you quotes.
You will need to have two quotes from Night and two quotes from the genocide articles in your paper.
Use all three lead-ins
You should have 5 paragraphs when you are done
