Warm Up Have you ever completed a skills inventory or participated in a personal assessment of your interests and skills? (page 60 of your workbook) There are a number of assessment tools available for you to use to help you identify career paths. Today you are going to be using one of these tools to help you determine what type of job you might be interested in for International Towne. 3 minutes

In your International Towne workbook, turn to page 44 (titled International Towne Skills Assessment Part I) and please complete individually Once you have completed the Skills Assessment, enter the number of A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, E’s, and F’s that you got on the assessment next to each letter 10 minutes

Now turn to page 45 titled Skills Assessment: Part II
Compare your scores that you got on page 44 to each category to help determine which positions you may be best suited for. If you have a score of 4 or more next to any one letter, look at that letter on page 45, read the position, these are possible positions you would want to apply for. Do you agree with the skills assessment? Explain why Are those the types of positions you would have applied for? 5 minutes

Reviewing Career Opportunities
Turn to pages 10-13, review the International Career Opportunities, circle the positions you are interested in and that match your skills and interests from the assessment you just took. Read the caption about each position to get a better idea about what that job requires. 5 minutes

Overview Students completed a Skills Assessment to match their skills with positions available in International Towne. Students review the International Career Opportunities and apply for a minimum of six International Towne positions by completing a Position Application.

International Towne Position Application
Turn to page 46 in your workbook You will have 5 minutes to complete the International Towne Position Application Presidents or Leaders, Finance Ministers, and Custom Agents: Since there are presidents or leaders, finance ministers, and custom agents in every country, if you are interested in those positions, check the appropriate spaces in the first column of the application. If you are interested in being president, finance ministers or customs agents in specific countries, you will have the opportunity of listing that country of choice at the bottom of the first column. Other Positions: You will find the rest of the positions for each country listed under the heading of that specific country. The countries are listed in alphabetical order in the second and third columns on the application. Remember, you need to mark a 1 for your number 1 choice, 2 for you second choice, and so on 5 minutes

Discussion What is a resume? Why is it important?
A resume is a written compilation of your education, work experience, credentials, and accomplishments that is used to apply for jobs. It is one of the most important pieces of any job application What is a cover letter? What is the purpose of it? It is a way of introducing yourself to potential employers and explaining why you are suitable for the desired position. They are very similar to persuasive essays! 5 minutes

Overview Every student will participate in an interview.
Teachers will try to place students in one of their position choices, but sometimes it is necessary to place applicants where they are most needed.

Cover Letters Task: Complete the following cover letter for the positions you are interested in. Remember this will be general since you are using the same cover letter for all 6 positions you are applying for. In the real world, you would be very specific as to what job you are applying for. This should be your best work with good hand writing and something you are proud of! The better the work, the more likely you are going to get the position you want

Rough Draft/Final Put your thoughts down on a scratch sheet of paper prior to filling out the final cover letter. You want your final cover letter to be in your best handwriting!

Discussion Why are interviews important?
Employers decide how prepared and qualified an applicant is based on how a person handles him/herself during the interview. Everything an applicant does in an interview conveys something to the interviewer (positive or negative). Applicants are evaluated on: Appearance and dress Attitude Preparedness Ability to communicate Educational achievements

Discussion What are some “DO’S” of interview skills that make good impressions? Do’s of Interviewing (page 48): Learn about the company and the position for which you are applying. Dress appropriately. Be on time. Make eye contact. Be enthusiastic and SMILE. Use a firm handshake. Maintain good posture. Have a positive attitude. (Attitude equals performance.) Answer questions completely. Speak slowly and clearly. Be honest. Be yourself!

Discussion What are some “DON’Ts” of interview skills that make bad impressions? Don’ts of Interviewing (page 48): Be late. Chew gum. Be negative. Fidget, i.e., play with hair, chew fingernails, crack knuckles, rock the chair. Be too modest. Answer questions with only yes or no. Dress inappropriately. Make negative comments about a former employer or place of work. Avoid eye contact. Interrupt the interviewer. Offer a limp handshake.

When interviewing, ways to prepare…
Research the organization. Know position responsibilities and qualifications. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Decide how to convince the interviewer that you are the best person for the position. Mentally prepare for questions an interviewer may ask you.

What is your experience for this position? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Why do you want this position? How would you describe yourself? What are your interests and hobbies? What makes you the best person for this position? What is one thing you are most proud of?

Optional Role Play if Time permits
The teacher and another student are going to practice an interview. As the interview is going on, Watch carefully and be ready to provide constructive criticism about how you handled the interview. Refer students to the list of “do’s and don’ts” on the board. Have fun with the role-play and make certain to do a number of the “don’ts.” After the interview, ask students to critique the applicant’s performance. Next, role-play a good interview based on the tips the students provided. If there is time, you can pair the students and have them practice a good interview by switching roles after ten minutes. Live Interview Directions
You will be interviewed for the positions you specified on your applications. You will have one general interview, not six. Remind sometimes students get placed in positions and countries where they are most needed. Interviews will be conducted LIVE in this classroom. Each interview will last between 2 ½ to 3 minutes You will turn in your cover letter, resume, and position application sheet to the interviewer. Teacher will use cover letter, resume, position application sheet, and interview to place students into position. Each student will participate in a 3 minute interview conducted by the teacher. When you are not interviewing, you will have a task to complete for each interview. These will be submitted at the end of the day. Failure to complete the tasks will result in you forfeiting your desired position.
