2 Figure 1 Using a newly established in vitro hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection model in human hepatoma cells, an improved in vivo HEV-infection model (in urokinase plasminogen activator transgenic–SCID mice xenografted with primary human hepatocytes) and the analysis of serum from patients infected with HEV, allowed the identification of three forms of the viral ORF2 protein. ORF2i was found to be associated with infectious virus particles, whereas the glycosylated form ORF2g and the cleaved form ORF2c are not.
