4 What stops people from participating in sport?
Sport is available to everybody. Sports clubs and leisure facilities go to great lengths to ensure that they meet everyone’s needs. Local authorities and the government spend thousands of pounds on campaigns to increase participation in sport. Lifestyle Family So why, in April 2011, were approximately only 16% of people (aged 16 and over) in the UK participating in sport or active recreation for at least 30 minutes 3 days a week? Friends

What determines the popularity of a sport? Swimming is the UK’s most popular sport in terms of adult participants. Between October 2008 and April 2011 swimming has seen a decline of over 200,000 participants, yet table tennis has seen an increase of nearly 40,000.

6 What determines the popularity of a sport?
Other traditionally popular sports such as football, golf, tennis and rugby are also showing decreases in participation … … yet participation in mountaineering and canoeing is on the rise. Why could this be?

9 What else can sport teach us?
Pierre de Coubertin said “The most important thing is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.” As well as keeping fit and healthy, participation in sport can teach us valuable lessons which can be transferred and used in a number of situations throughout the rest of our lives……

12 What is a major sporting event and why do people want to hold them?
What makes a sporting event major? Is it the popularity of the athletes involved? Why do countries and cities spend so much time, money and effort in trying to organise and hold a major sporting event? Is it worth it? Is it the amount of money that’s been spent on it? Is it the location in which it takes place?
