1
Our Solar System The solar system is made up of all the planets that orbits our Sun. In addition to planets the solar system also consists of moons, comets, asteroids, and minor planets, and dust and gas.
2
THE SUN The Sun is in the center of our solar system.
The Sun is a star of our solar system. 8 planets orbit the Sun.
3
MERCURY Mercury orbits the Sun in 88 days.
Mercury is not a Dwarf planet. It is a solar system planet.
4
VENUS Venus is the hottest planet.
Venus you can’t see when your down on Earth. Venus is the 2nd planet in our solar system.
5
EARTH Earth is 3rd planet of our solar system. Earth gives us seasons.
Earth goes around Venus and Mercury around the Sun.
6
MARS Mars is not much farther than Earth from the Sun.
Mars is also called the Red Planet. Mars has both North and South polar ice caps much like Earth.
7
THE ASTROID BELT The asteroid belt is a belt that is in the solar system. The asteroid belt was discovered in 1801. There are thousands upon thousands of rock and debris within the asteroid belt.
8
JUPITER Jupiter has a diameter of 88,700 miles.
Jupiter is 777 kilometres from the Sun. Jupiter is the first of the “ gas giants”.
9
SATURN Saturn has beautiful rings. Saturn has at least 18 moons.
Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system.
10
URANUS Uranus is made out of gases.
Uranus was first seen by William Herschel. Uranus has a total of 27 moons.
11
NEPTUNE Neptune is the 8th planet from the Sun.
Neptune is one of the four “gas giants”. Neptune has a diameter of 29,297 miles.
12
DWarF PLANET PLUTO Pluto is a dwarf planet.
It takes Pluto 248 and one half years to complete its orbit around the Sun. In 1930 Pluto was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh.
13
GALAXY There are potentially more than 170 billion galaxies in the observable universe. A galaxy has billions of stars. Our galaxy has only 8 planets.
14
Asteroids Asteroids are small solar system bodies that orbit the Sun.
The first asteroid was discovered in 1801 by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazza. Asteroids are also known as planetoids or minor planets.
