In the United States, many people use drugs without knowing their effects. One of these is Cannabis, popularly known as marijuana. A survey conducted by NSHD in 2016 stated, “Approximately 4.0 million people aged 12 or older in 2016 had a marijuana use disorder in the past year, which represents 1.5 percent of people aged 12 or older.”(p. 1) The effects of marijuana addiction are , , and

Loss of mental ability as reflected in lower IQs. A study conducted in New Zealand found out that youth who began abusing the drug from a young age, when they were older had a lower IQ than their counterpart: For example, a study from New Zealand showed teens who had an“use disorder lost an average of 8 IQ points between ages 13 and 38.”

Many people in the US are addicted to Cannabis without understanding the short and long term effects. Not only does it impair the brain and the rest of the body, but it also created a strain in social relationships and on the family’s budget.
