3 Class discussion- Intro to unit 2
What is informative writing? Aside from inform, what else does informative writing try to do? What is writing for public spaces? What kinds of public space writing have you done before ENC1930?

4 Class discussion- close & active reading
What reading strategies seemed most useful to you from Juliette’s presentation? Why are we discussing reading strategies in a the section of our class related to informative writing?

5 Close & active reading skills
Know the context Determine the author’s thesis or controlling idea Look up words or terminology you are not familiar with Annotate the text as you read (or take notes elsewhere) Read multiple times Once for enjoyment and twice for analysis Once as a believer and once as a doubter Make connections Ask questions!

In your unit 2 groups Read “Adler’s Theory of Birth Order” on pg as a believer What is Adler’s main idea? What is the most convincing supporting point in Adler’s theory? How do your personal experiences support Adler’s theory? (You may wish to identify individual group members in this answer if your experiences are very different) What questions would you ask Adler to learn more about this theory?

8 Group activity- reading as a doubter
In your unit 2 groups Read “Adler’s Theory of Birth Order” on pg as a believer What is the weakest element of the article? What is Adler’s theory based on? How do your personal experiences contradict Adler’s theory? What questions would you ask the author to show difficulties you found while reading the piece

9 Group activity- rhetorical appeals on the web
In your unit 2 groups Select one current web article (published within the last month) from a professional news site. Read through the article and answer the questions below What is the title of the article? Who are the author and publishing company? How does this article use ethos? Describe and give at least one quote. How does this article use pathos? Describe and give at least one quote. How does this article use logos Describe and give at least one quote.

10 homework Find an example of a fake news story (or one that contains false information) Bring a copy of the article to class on Thursday
