Blue, red and green circles denote settlements associated with paternal birthplaces alone, maternal birthplaces alone, and both paternal and maternal birthplaces (at least one each, albeit not necessarily for the same volunteer) in that order. The size of each circle relatively indicates the total number of paternal and/or maternal birthplaces associated with a given geographic location. Self-stated paternal and maternal birthplaces for each volunteer were queried through the Google Maps application programming interface ( to obtain the corresponding precise geographic coordinates, which were then plotted on the map using an in-house web application.
