Archaeological History
Excavated between 1902 and 1905, called an ‘Early Fort’ later to be called a fortlet. Determined to be a Flavian Outpost. In further excavation interpreted the fortlet to be Antonine or possibly of Iron Age date. In 2001 further excavation interprets the site to be a construction camp for the Antonine Wall.
6
Who occupied it? First Cohort of Hamian Bowmen (cohors I Primae Hamiorum Saggitariorum). First Cohort of Baetasians (cohors I Baetasiorum quingenaria peditata civium Romanorum ob virtutem et fidem) Bathhouse at Bar Hill
7
Significant Details about the Fort
The fort has four round corners, unusual for the forts in the area. Its north wall is not shared with the Antonine Wall itself. It was briefly occupied and abandoned before the end of Antoninus’ reign. Bar Hill lacks an Annex which other nearby forts posses. Fort demolished in 160 CE.
8
Conclusions The fort may have predated the Wall, given its distance.
The builders must have had adequate space for building, given the lack of an annex. Fighting in the late 150s CE probably led to its abandonment and demolition. View from North side of Bar Hill
