The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a United States standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment. It is part of the National Fire Codes series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
NFPA 79 is the section of the NEC that focuses on the electrical wiring standards used with industrial machinery.

Why need MTW
NFPA 79 limits the use of AWM in certain machinery
Some styles have thinner insulations
Some meet bare minimum flammability requirement
AWM wire and cable that also carry an MTW or other suitable listing may be used in certain machines
NFPA 79 points out MTW as a suitable UL listing for industry machinery
In the latest version of NFPA 79, it limited the use of AWM in certain machinery due to some styles have thinner insulation and meet bare minimum flammability requirement. The thin insulation does not provide the necessary durability against abrasion and abuse, and result in exposed conductors when subjected to mechanical abuse and cause hazardous condition. The AWM wire and cable that meet only the bare minimum flammability requirement can cause fire under certain extreme environments.
However, wire and cable with a UL AWM recognition may be used under NFPA79 so long as it also carries MTW or other suitable UL listing.
NFPA 79 points out MTW as one of the wire and cable that is suitable to be sued in industry machinery.
Although NFPA 79 is not law but recommendation, machine tool builders are increasingly using MTW wire and cable to sure that machine will meet any requirements of local codes. Similarly, buyers of industrial machinery are aware that MTW-equipped machines help ensure compliance with local codes.

MTW is an UL rating that covers machine tool wire and cable. The jacket of MTW for multiconductor cables must be PVC. The insulation of MTW must be flame-retardant PVC or PVC with Nylon coating that comply with UL vertical flame test (VW-1). The MTW-rated cables carry a 600-volt rating and with a gauge size of 22 AWG or larger. The cables may be used in dry locations at temperatures to 90°C and 60°C where the cables may be exposed to moisture or the oil and coolants typically used in industrial machinery. MTW wire and cable are required to be oil resistant and meet the requirement of Oil Res l.
