Answer: Helen knew the storm was coming because her face was slapped with cold, sharp wind. The smell of flowers was gone, and she smelled the deep dark, earth. The leaves began to shake And twigs came down, scratching her arms and legs.
The effect is that Helen knew the storm was coming.
