How does Helen know the storm is coming? What CAUSES her to realize the storm is coming? Answer: Helen knew the storm was coming because her face was slapped with cold, sharp wind. The smell of flowers was gone, and she smelled the deep dark, earth. The leaves began to shake And twigs came down, scratching her arms and legs. The effect is that Helen knew the storm was coming.

It’s a narrative because it tells a story instead of giving information. It’s a nonfiction because the story is about a real person and actually happened. We call this Narrative Nonfiction

5 Identify Facts and Opinions
A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false. An opinion tells what someone thinks or feels. “Honeysuckles smell nice.” is an opinion because it is what someone thinks. “Annie was Helen’s teacher.” is a fact because it can be proven true.

What is the story’s purpose? What questions do I think the story will answer? What is my prediction? What do I understand about the section I just read? Can I summarize the key ideas of the section? Should I read the section again to get a better understanding? What can I picture in my head? Are there words I do not know? What pre-reading questions did I answer? Was my prediction right? What are the main ideas? What conclusions can I make from reading this? How can I summarize this story? Did I make any connections? Would I tell my friend to read this?
