2. Rapid Growth of cities in the late 1800s
In 1860, only one American in five lived in the city.
By 1890, one in three lived in a city.
For the first time, the U.S had cities the size of London and Paris
Urbanization happened because industry attracted people.
Fast-growing cities
were close to waterways for transportation
New technology like Elevated trains, 1887 first electric streetcar system
1897, first electric subway train under streets of Boston.

3. Problems of Urban Life
Rapid urbanization brought many problems. Fire was a common threat in tightly packed neighborhoods. In 1871, fire engulfed Chicago. The fire spread by wind and made the fire even worse, The Chicago Fire leveled about 3 square miles of downtown. This problem killed 300 people, and left 18,000 homeless.
Tenements, buildings divided into many tiny apartments, sometimes there were no windows, indoor plumbing, and heat.

4. The Excitement of City Life
Electric lights

Tall buildings
Department stores, these downtown stores attracted hordes of people. To meet the needs of shoppers, merchants created a new type of store, The Department Store.
