What is Geography? Geography – Geo means Earth. Geography mean description of Earth The study of geography includes the Earth’s physical features such as landforms or natural features. Why study geography??? Geography helps you understand the area around you. It involves learning physical and human geography. What is the usefulness of Geography? Consider a place like Galveston knowing about it’s geography would tell you that Galveston has violent storms. This type of info can help people be safe. Geogrpahy can also predict growth in a place like Austin. This is useful to plan for the distribution or resources such as water.

5 Themes of Geography Location- Relative and Absolute
Relative locations are given using the compass rose. The are directions given in relation to another. For example- I live 50 miles southeast of Houston Absolute locations are given with exact longitude and latitude coordinates. Region- An area of land with common physical and cultural features Interaction- People adapt to the environment around them. Think about the native tribes and how some of them had to move to other areas or find new food sources depending on the seasons. Places- Places are described using both physical and human features. Movement- This involves the study of transportation and communication. Transportation is the movement of goods. Communication is the movement of ideas. L-P-I-M-R
