Big Picture ST PATRICK’S PE DEPT
Taking part in sport puts the body under stress. Knowing how to reduce the risk of injury when taking part in sport is a vital skill whether you are a lifeguard, steward, coach, manager etc. In this lesson you will develop your understanding of how the type of activity, coaching/supervision and the environment can influence the risk of injuries occurring.

Extrinsic Intrinsic ST PATRICK’S PE DEPT
Internal factors which the individual is in control of e.g. age, gender, physical preparation etc. Extrinsic External factors which are outside of the individuals control e.g. weather, equipment, poor coaching etc. Students to copy definitions into their books Extension: Identify on your whiteboard some other examples of intrinsic or extrinsic factors that could influence the risk of injury in sport

1. Type of activity Use sentence starters for LA – The type of activity can cause injuries in sport. Contact sports such as rugby are often caused by…… Non contact sports such as gymnastics are often caused by ………. (Show for 1 minute) Produce 2 sentences in your exercise books which describes the differences between how injuries are caused in sports such as rugby compared to sports like gymnastics. Use the keywords ‘contact’ and ‘non contact’ sports in your answer

Extrinsic ST PATRICK’S PE DEPT 2. Coaching/supervision
There are 3 ways that coaching/supervision can influence the risk of injury in sport: Poor / incorrect coaching techniques Ineffective communication skills Importance of adhering to rules and regulations Task: Watch the video. Whilst watching think about how Kes’ coaching style could lead to an injury occurring. Students to feedback to class on how they think Kes’ style of coaching could lead to an injury occurring. Prompt students to think about the 3 different ways of: poor/ incorrect coaching techniques, ineffective communication and importance of adhering to rules and regulations

1. Identify a contact sport and describe how an injury could occur 2. Describe, using a sporting example, how other participants could cause an injury to occur 3. Describe, using a sporting example, why following rules and regulations could reduce the risk of injury occurring. Students have 2 minutes to read the questions and discuss possible answers with their partners. Teacher to then choose students at random to answer the questions.
