The Articles of Confederation
The first government of the U.S. and its major flaws…
3
How we got here… After the American Revolutionary War was over with the signing of the Treaty of Paris 1783, the U.S. had to implement a form of government to run the country. Borders of the U.S. were official set to all land East of the Mississippi River belong to the U.S. except for Florida. This form of government had only one branch: A legislative branch to pass laws for the whole nation. The individual states were given more power than the national government.
4
Bound to be Problems Because this government was set up with only one branch and the individual states were given more power than the national government, there were going to be major weaknesses that the national government could not function very well.

The Activity: You Create the Gallery Walk
Each table has readings over one weakness of the Articles of Confederation. This is going to be the weakness that you report to the entire class upon. Step One: By yourself, go through the short reading about your weakness. In the chart that was given to you, in box one you need to write down what your weakness was. In box two, you need to list reasons why that weakness was so bad. An example has been done for you as a model. This is the individual part of the activity.
6
Step Two Once each person has completed their boxes for their weakness, you need to each share with each other what you found. You will all have the same weakness in your group, but by doing this, you will be able to hear what each person found and be able to add anything to yours that you may have missed.
7
Step Three: The Flyer At each table you have a piece of large colored paper. On this paper you are to create a large flyer over your weakness of the Articles of Confederation. Each person in your group has a role. Artist: This person is responsible for drawing the illustrations of the flyer. Writer: This person is responsible for writing down the information on the flyer. Fact Checker/ Helper: This person gives ideas to both the Artist and the Writer based on the information and helps both of their team mates finish their part of the flyer. Your flyer must have the following five items: You must have a slogan in the middle that you create as a group. The Slogan does not have to be very long, but it must relate to your weakness. In the top two corners, the artist must draw two visuals that relate to your weakness. In corner one, you must draw a visual that directly shows what your weaknesses was. In corner two, you must draw a visual that illustrates why that weakness was such a problem. In the bottom two corners, the writer must write down the information that relates to your weakness. In corner three, you must write down your weakness. In corner four, you must write down all the problems that came about from your weakness (USE YOUR CHART). Use the example over the screen as a model of how to set up this activity.

Step Four: The Gallery Walk
Each group will visit the flyers of the other groups to fill in the missing boxes of their chart. You must write down what the weakness was and the problems it caused. (Honors Only) Each group will have four sticky notes. When you go to each group, you must write on your sticky note if the visual was a good representation of the weakness. If it was good, explain why. If it was not good, explain why.
