Water Water is not a nutrient but it is required for life
Your body is about 70% water Every cell in the body contains water

What does water do? Removing Waste Cooling the body
Helping your body to use the food you eat

Body temperature is 37ºC and if the temperature increases just a few degrees the body cells get damaged. Cooling the body If the body becomes too hot, glands in the skin will release water (sweat) onto the surface of the skin which evaporates and cools the body down.

What does water do? Removing Waste
Water is needed to transport waste products from the body. The kidneys filter the blood and produce urine. Removing Waste Water also helps waste products (poo!) move though the intestines

What does water do? Helping your body to use the food you eat
In the stomach - food mixes with acid and water. These both help to digest food. Water is an important part of saliva which is used to help swallow food Helping your body to use the food you eat

What does water do? Most people need 2 litres of water a day which is about 8 average sized glasses Besides water you can get the fluid you need from milk, fruit juices as well as tea, coffee and other drinks made with water.

Energy balance Energy balance means eating enough for your body to stay the same weight Eat more than your body needs and you will put on weight (remember – stored energy in FAT) Eat less than your body needs and you will loose weight (body uses stored energy)

BMR BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. This is a fancy way of saying how much energy your body needs while at rest (sleeping) Even when your body is sleeping it uses energy for pumping blood, breathing and digestion.

PAL PAL stands for Physical Activity Level. It shows your daily activity as a number. This will vary depending on your age and occupation. People with a lower PAL are less active.
