What is Technology?
2
Technology is a human process of applying knowledge and resources to satisfy human needs and wants.
3
Systems of Technology All human technological accomplishments can be categorized into three systems of technology.
4
Biochemical Technology
Involves using living organisms or parts thereof to make or modify products, to satisfy human needs and wants.
5
Informational Technology
The process of encoding, transmitting, receiving, decoding, storing, and retrieving data to satisfy human needs and wants. Data Communication / Technology
6
Physical Technology Involves using resources to construct, manufacture, and transport products and people to satisfy human needs and wants.
8
Resources of Technology
Every technological development makes use of seven types of resources. T.E.M.P.T.I.C
9
Tools and Machines Items such as: hammers, screwdrivers, robots and microscopes. Tools and machines are used to extend human capabilities.
10
Energy Is used to manufacture products, to transport goods and people, and to supply our heating, cooling, and lighting needs. Energy sources can be limited (coal, oil, gas, etc.) or unlimited (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.) Calorie
11
Materials Materials include air, timber, water, land, minerals, plants and animals. There are two types of natural resources non-renewable and renewable. Non-renewable cannot be grown or replaced.
12
People People design and create technology using their knowledge and intelligence. People provide the labor which industry needs.
13
Time Is measured in periods based upon the rising and setting of the sun. Time has increasing importance in the information age of today.
14
Information Every technological activity requires information. We need to know what to do and how to do it. *Information is doubling every five years.* Knowledge is created from information.
15
Capital (Money) Used to produce a product, set up a communication system, grow food, or transport goods or people, we must use capital resources. Cash, stock, buildings, pieces of equipment, and land are all capital resources.
