Kitchen are warm, inviting places where tasty foods are prepared. However, many dangers lurk there. In fact, more accidents occur in the kitchen than in any other room. Thousands of people are hurt in kitchen accidents every year Types of accidents Cuts Falls Burns Fires Choking Fire safety Accidents are caused when people don’t know the safe to work

3 Safety tips when using a knife
Cuts Cuts can be caused by many things. Sharp kitchen tools, such as knives, graters, and the blades in the blenders, are the most common cause. Safety tips when using a knife Always pick up a knife by its handle Keep knives sharp Cut away from your body and other Use kitchen knives only to cut food Wash knives one by one When loading a dishwasher, place the tips of knives and other sharp tools pointing down in the basket

4 Falls slipping on a wet floor or tripping over a box can result in injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones Safety tips Keep floors clean and dry Be sure all rugs have a nonskid backing No matter how busy you are, do not run or push in the kitchen Make sure spills are promptly wiped up and wet floor sigh is displayed until the floor is dry

5 Burns Most burns are minor and heal readily, though some are serious.
Safety Tips Never use a damp or wet towel as a hot pad Avoid reaching across a hot surface unit. Never place a hot pan at a dishwashing station without alerting the dishwashing staff When carrying a hot pan or liquid through the kitchen, loudly warn others by saying “hot” Use a pot holder when picking up hot pots

6 Fire every year, fires and smoke kill many people
For a fire to start, you must have fuel, heat, and air Safety Tips Excessive grease buildup on equipment If you smell gas, turn off the range Install smoke alarms and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

7 Fire Consider the following scenarios. A sauté pan of oil gets too hot and suddenly catches fire. The fire spreads to another pan. A broiler full of steaks dripping fat suddenly bursts into flames. The flames shoot out the back of the broiler and into the ventilation system. When should you call the fire department When should you reach for the fire extinguisher? When should you evacuate? The first step in dealing with any fire is to quickly assess the severity of the fire.
