A2: The Garden Problem Grade 6
2
Background: School Garden
A school was built on an old lettuce farm. Plants do not grow in the school garden. Why? Did the old farm use up everything in the soil? Garden observations were made for 1 week. Noon temperature averaged 21 C = 70 F. Every day was sunny. Soil was dry and sandy. On other side of school is a watered yard with healthy green plants and different color soil.
3
Background: Plant Needs
Almost every plant needs four things to grow: Air Sunlight Water Soil If even one is missing, the plant won’t be able to survive because it can’t make food for itself
4
Vocabulary Celsius: Data: Evidence: Opinion: Metric temperature scale
Facts about something used for planning Evidence: Proof, facts or knowledge from observation Opinion: Strong belief but no exact support or knowledge
5
Analysis 1: Evidence/Opinion?
Students observed the soil felt dry and sandy. Students sure that plants can grow & survive. Average garden temperature is 21 C = 70 F. The old farm used up everything in the soil. There is enough sunlight for plants to grow. Yard soil looks different than the garden soil. Dry soil does not have enough water for plants
6
Evidence and Opinion Evidence Opinion Soil is dry and sandy.
Garden temp is 21 C = 70 F. Plenty of sunlight for plants. Yard soil looks different. Students sure that plants can grow and survive. Old farm used up the soil. Dry soil does not have enough water for plants.

A2 Garden Analysis pA11 #2-3 On separate paper, answer each in 1 paragraph. 2) Your aunt gets cold when the temperature gets below 60 degrees. Does she mean Celsius or Fahrenheit? Explain how you know. 3) Why do you think plants won’t grow at the school? Explain with evidence from the book.
