Hand tools Treat all tools with respect.
Tomas Callanan Hand tools Treat all tools with respect. Use tools only as demonstrated by the teacher When using sharp-edged tools such as chisels, push the blade away from you, keeping both hands behind the edge so you wont cut yourself. Sharpen, clean or replace blades before they become damaged or dull. A sharp tool cuts smoothly, accurately and safely. A blunt tool will slip causing injury. Materials must be held firmly in the vice when cutting, shaping and drilling. Ensure to carry tools with sharp blades pointed towards the ground, to avoid causing injury to other persons Collecting of hand tools should be completed in a safe and quiet manner

Portable electric tools and machines
Tomas Callanan Portable electric tools and machines Each portable electric tools has its own individual safe working procedures. The basic safety rules will be followed for any portable electric tools such as a jigsaw, sander hand drill, biscuit jointer or router Similar safety procedures will be followed for use of each machine tool such as a drilling machine, chisel mortise machine, sanding machine, lathe, cam machine or band saw Sander Jigsaw Mortise Machine Sanding Machine Pillar Drill Band saw Lathe

safety rules for portable electric tools and machines
Tomas Callanan safety rules for portable electric tools and machines Before you start Only use with your teacher’s permission and under the teacher’s supervision Use if you have been fully trained and always adhere to the manufacturer’s safety guidelines Only one person per portable electric tool/machine, try to always use cordless tools when possible Check the plug is in good condition and ensure the chuck keys etc. are removed from the tool before switching on. Do not use portable tools in damp or wet locations and never carry a portable electric tool by the cable. Double check everything before starting Sander Jigsaw Mortise Machine Pillar Drill

This may include safety glasses/goggles/visor, dust mask or respirator and ear protectors Everyday eye glasses only have impact resistant lenses, they are not safety glasses Do not wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties or jewellery, which could get caught in moving parts of the tool. Tie back long hair or wear a protective hair covering to contain it.

safety rules for portable electric tools and machines
Tomas Callanan safety rules for portable electric tools and machines Whilst machine/tool is in use Hold with a firm grip and securely in vice Never walk away from a portable electric tool/machine that’s running, wait until it comes to a complete stop. A serious injury could occur if the tool moves accidently Do not tamper with or remove safety guards Switch off and unplug when changing bits blades, belts, or abrasive paper. Tomas Callanan safe use of chemicals Chemicals are used everywhere. In the home; bleaches, drain cleaners, disinfectants, weed killers etc. In the technology room we use solvents, sprays, adhesives, paints, varnish, stains, lacquers, oils and preservatives. Dangers of Chemicals Chemicals are essential for everyday life but they can be dangerous. If not used correctly they can catch fire, causes burns and damage to your health and the environment Chemical waste is a major cause of pollution. If poured down the sink, chemicals can end up in lakes and waterways. The effects can be very dangerous for fish and other aquatic life Inhaling fumes from chemicals can cause dizziness, which may lead to a workshop accident. If this happens seek medical advice straight away Chemical splashes or spillages can cause irritation of the eyes and burning of the skin

labels on hazardous materials
Tomas Callanan labels on hazardous materials Corrosive These substances destroy living tissue, including the eyes and skin. Flammable These substances may easily catch fire in a workshop under normal conditions Toxic These substances are a serious risk to health and can cause death Harmful These substances are less of a health risk than toxic substances, but they must be handled with care Oxidising These substances may produce heat as they react with other materials. They can create a fire risk Explosive These substances may explode if ignited in air or exposed to heat, naked flames or sparks. A sudden shock or friction may also start an explosion Environment These substances are dangerous for the environment

use of chemicals safely
Tomas Callanan use of chemicals safely Using chemicals safely Wear respirator, goggles and gloves when handling chemicals. Always wash hands after using solvents, stains, glues, preservatives and finishes Food and drink may never be consumed when there is poisonous materials around. Store flammable or toxic chemicals in a cool place under lock and key in well labelled containers Workshop environment Chemicals can give off harmful fumes and strong odours so the workshop must be well ventilated. Always use a respirator for jobs that generate dust and toxic fumes Naked flames or sparks must never be allowed near a flammable substance because they could cause an explosion or a fire Waste chemical products and empty containers should be disposed of using authorised disposal routes and sites
