Multicultural Fiction By: Gordon, ryan, Sarah, and Jacqui

2 Definition: Multicultural fiction features authentic cultures, ethnic groups and characters that are new or unfamiliar to the reader. "The term 'multiculturalism' originates in education, springing from recent curriculum changes in the U.S. public schools that needed to give more attention to history and literature. 

3 Description of what is distinctive about the genre:
Formed by Teachers and Librarians who need to present Diversity in the classroom Parents wanting to give students material about their culture. Content is away from phonic and the material focuses more on reading instruction

4 Examples of ways to use Multicultural books in the classroom:
Have students research their background of their own personal culture and then find a book that related to their culture Have students all do book reports on that book Share with class the book and how it relates to them and that culture Show how everyone is different and makes it personal/ get to know one another better

Pretty much the same as regular fiction books Gives the reader a view into another world or culture Has strong characters and character interactions Lots of dialogue between characters High level of detail throughout the story
