Unit Launch How are the following terms related to the bowling ball activity : Speed, velocity, acceleration, force, gravity, weight, inertia, and friction?
2
Force and Motion SPS8. Students will determine relationships among force, mass, and motion. a. Calculate velocity and acceleration.
3
Speed A measure of how fast an object is traveling. Speed = distance traveled / time taken S = d/t
4
Speed Example: The car you are riding in travels 140 miles in 2 hours. S = d/t S = 140 mi / 2 hr S = 70 mi/hr
5
Velocity The speed and direction in which an object is moving. v = d/t and direction
6
Velocity Example: Your car is traveling at a velocity of 70 mi/hr south.
7
Acceleration The rate at which an object’s velocity (speed) is changing. Acceleration = (final velocity – initial velocity) divided by time a = (vf – vi) / t
8
Acceleration Example:
A jet flying at 125 m/s increases its velocity to 140 m/s in 10 s. a = (vf – vi) / t a = (140 m/s m/s) / 10s a = 1.5 m/s/s a = 1.5 m/s2
9
Force Any push or pull that could cause a change in motion.
10
Types of Forces Applied Frictional Electrostatic Magnetic
Gravitational Nuclear
