24.2: Life During the 1920s There are a lot more cars suburbs, more travel – economy and tourism more interactions with different people social tensions, mass culture Women are getting jobs in the government, women government officials (state legislatures and house representive) – more education and the 19th Amendment allows women the right to vote. Flappers: new woman – style – cut their hair short, wore makeup, short dresses – “new freedom” women empowerment, smokes, drinks, dances The Jazz Age – radios and music, broadcast all over, music becomes very very important the rise of leisure activities and entertainment The Great Migration – Many Af. Am go North and work in factories. Northern whites are not welcoming racial tension. Harlem Renaissance and blossoming of African American neighborhoods in the US New KKK – also went after Catholics, Jews, and Immigrants Blacks became more involved especially in sports and entertainment and the arts, breaking color barriers Religious: Fundamentalism – strict translation of the Bible. Strict Morals.
