WHAT SHOULD AMERICA’S PURPOSE BE AS WE MOVE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY
WHAT SHOULD AMERICA’S PURPOSE BE AS WE MOVE INTO THE 21ST CENTURY? HOW DOES USFP FIT INTO THIS PURPOSE?
2
US FOREIGN POLICY IN THE 21ST C
What evidence is there to suggest that America’s global role in the 21st century will be different than what it was in 2002? How are things changing? Has the US “blown it” as Zakaria (and Ferguson this week on the cover of Newsweek) put it? What is our appropriate reference point for what role America should play? (1898, 1917, 1945, 1991, 2002) When did things start to go south for the US and who is responsible? Why will things get better or worse as we move away from the Bush Doctrine? Is the decline o1f the US inevitable and irreversible? What should our attitude be with respect to our current and future role? What will it be?
3
US FOREIGN POLICY in the 21st C
What evidence is there to support Zakaria’s claim that this time “anti-Americanism” is different? What do we think about Zakaria’s suggestion for how we should move forward? Choose priorities rather than doing everything. What should our core interests and priorities be? How should we deal with the rise of China in particular? Build broad rules (and institutions) rather than narrow interests. Should Americans have to play by the same rules as everyone else? Be Bismark (be friends with all the great powers) rather than Britain (balance against other great powers) Be flexible with respect to ideology and methods to secure American interests. Understand that the future of conflict is asymmetrical warfare. Be legitimate. This is the source of power. Focus on being a respected global leader.
