Energy4All Annual General Meeting 2017
Annual review 2016/7 – the value of co-operation Mike Smyth – Chair, Energy4All Welcome – I’m Mike Smyth, Chair of E4A I’m a bit stiff – good fun last night You are sitting next to someone very special – someone who is making co-operative community renewable energy happen – who is tackling climate change directly. Exactly the sort of person you wish you met more often. So if you haven’t already say good morning to your neighbour – and give them a big smile! This is the annual report to you on what your co-operative has done in the past months. The accounts are for 2016, but I am bringing you up to date. Apology from Marna who is at Fens Winner of a 2012 Ashden Award.

Baywind – Harlock Hill Baywind – pioneer of community ownership or renewable energy; ethical investment and practical action; pioneer of a movement; CEE conference, and most dynamic part of co-operative movement Pioneer of values; pioneer of E4A that by co-operating together – and sharing development – achieve more for our mission

Energy4All: energy co-operatives co-operating
A co-operative of 23 independent community energy co-operatives which: co-operate to meet operational and administrative needs co-operate to develop and share expertise co-operate to deliver future community energy through a shared development team co-operate to deliver representation I like changing the number – 23, welcome Arrochar Great principle of each Energy4All member has been helped into being by those co-ops that went before and will now help according to their means other energy co-ops to develop. We co-operate to run ourselves better and to share learning. The surplus from that together with contributions made on a fundraising fund the Energy4All development team so that the family of co-ops co-operate to support new community energy So the administration fee to Energy4All also helps deliver new community energy projects. We do things no one else does and hope to inspire others to follow. By co-operating we have access to expertise and full time resource Shared values and a mission Arrochar took two weeks to raise the money – a fantastic benefit for all

Energy4All – operational improvements highlights 2016/7
New and enhanced IT system New web sites; improved communications to members Development of systems to manage a large number of solar sites Streamline accounts and systems The Energy4All family co-operates to ensure they all have full time availability of professional, experienced expertise. Lot of day to day work and mustn’t underplay that, but key developments. Added nearly 100 solar sites

Energy4All – development highlights 2016/7
Mean Moor windfarm purchased by 3 co-ops supported by Thrive 3 new co-ops launched – Reading, M&S and Arrochar 4 successful share issues, without EIS 11 co-ops undertaking construction of renewable energy Working with hundreds of volunteers The Energy4All family of community energy co- operatives has made this possible – thank you. 2015 was a year of share issues then 2016 was a year of construction – except much more than that. 4 share issues in period – one in calendar 2017 for Arrochar. And then bought Mean Moor Thanks to Marna, Annette and John in particular – huge task. Marna’s drive and fearlessness on this – I never thought it would happen.

Rumbling Bridge Edinburgh Arrochar Rainepower High Winds 11 co-ops with development work since I spoke last year – hard work! 3 hydro – one commissioned, two being constructed 2 large wind turbines at High Winds More than 80 solar arrays 2 relightings with LEDs 1 battery install Springbok M&S Energy Reading Wey Valley Schools Balcombe

High Winds High Winds Members at their AGM
Talk about development rather than operations before doing so - a very special moment. Energy4All has the philosophy of co-op get co-op, so Baywind supports creation of Westmill and so on. This time last year – this week, High Winds, successor to Baywind energised summer 2016. Snagging since Great that we had gone full circle and Energy4All members were able to support the creation of High Winds, the successor to Baywind, and the huge development effort it took.
10
Rumbling Bridge Hydro Intake weir, pipe in position, River Rapids
Different technology – very substantial community benefit, so new issues for us. Much more than operate a project – new development in style. Hugh Wallace
11
Rumbling Bridge Commissioned same day as E4A conference last September. This is the opening a few weeks later.
12
Edinburgh Solar Installation at Wardie Primary School with Johanna Carrie New development in style again – city based roof top; substantial; 24 buildings, mainly schools built in Surplus initially to improve energy efficiency
13
M&S Energy Society Shared brand. Unique. Oversubscribed in 3 weeks (Reading and Balcombe in even less). Reputation of our work. Solar with a difference – M&S tender; diversity in technology, relations, many other ways. Very complex – construct right to the wire Innovate – brand and commercial buildings
14
Cathedral in background. Note east/west panels. 8 sites
Truro Store
15
Glenleigh Park Primary Academy
Lovely picture – Germanic; what we should be doing. Exports 60% and now wants LEDs 150 kW
16
Schools’ Energy Co-operative
Now 31 arrays at 30 schools. 10 in Wey Valley 2 this year. 6 more in Balcombe. 20 or so Edinburgh. Manage nearly 100 solar installations -
17
Note adjacent woodland; site of chip barn just off map; note different heat main lengths – impacts efficiency. Southern section viable even with drop in RHI and oil price. Big carbo savings becoming bigger. Used first set of own chip.
18
Wey Valley Solar - LED Lighting
2 co-ops did LEDs last year; 4 installs now in total
19
Reading Community Energy
12 buildings in City based co-op with Council, Schools, NGOS and we hope commercial. Actively seeking more Just Around The Corner Activity Centre Installation

Arrochar Construction
Went on site last month – strong community engagement. Was going no where and rescued. Community unlocked landlord and raised the money
22
RainePower Construction
Needs real determination to deliver.
23
Acquired this site called Mean Moor next to High Winds and part of same development in many ways. Normally too expensive – need something special to make it work. Would make a fantastic community site. What is missing from photos
24
Westmill 24 24 Missing the people
Here is what Westmill does so well – adds the community to energy, and a whole new area opens up We would love to add the people to Mean Moor Westmill 24 24
