Reading and Writing •We use the Superkids phonics-based curriculum to systematically learn common word patterns and high frequency words •Solid foundation in phonics allows students to decode unfamiliar words •Mastery of sight words allows for increased fluency •Parents should become familiar with Superkids Online Portal as it provides access to books we are reading in class, plus games and activities for each unit. •We use the Comprehension Tool Kit to interact with authentic text, think critically as readers.

Sight words Fry sight word list 4-6 new words per week
Sight words are memorized not sounded out More sight words your child knows, the more successful he/she will be Memorizing sight words allows children to focus their energy on figuring out the unknown word: increases fluency and comprehension Link to first 100 sight word list is on my website

Reading Levels Our class goal is to move up one reading level every quarter. A reading assessment is given often to monitor growth. Assessment looks at reading accuracy Assessment looks at reading fluency Assessment looks at reading comprehension
5
DRA Levels Level A-1: Few words per page. Most words are sight words followed by a new word that matches the picture Level 2: Adds a few more sight words and also has the unknown word that matches the picture. Level 4: Contains many sight words and often has more than one sentence per page. Pictures offer a hint to help figure out the new word, but not a direct comparison Level 6: Many sentences per page. There is a mix of sight words and new words to read.
