Right side depicts early stages of neural development. Open circles are self-renewing stem cells, gray circles are neuroectodermal cells, and black circles are neurons. Red circles represent a putative clone, where descendents that occupy the stem zone remain together as the zone progresses posteriorly (arrows) and those that enter the transition zone are distributed along the RC axis (see Mathis et al., 2001).
