Goal Setting Recommend concentrating on SHORT TERM goals as they will give you more Confidence, Feedback and Pride in accomplishment. Goals need to be visible – written down and displayed. Goal Setting Goals are your stepping stones to success – they should provide a clear pathway. Goals once recorded and reviewed, provide the brain with a “blueprint” for action. Reward yourself when you achieve each goal – it’s VERY important. How do we know when we achieve our goals? 1. Feedback 2. Self Assessment The two are important on their own but are more powerful when used together. Simon Taufel

Feedback Everyone wants feedback on performance – given.
You need to be prepared to accept the negative feedback with the positive and use the negative as a motivator to work harder. Never fall into the trap of focussing on the person delivering the message rather than the message itself! Seek feedback specific to your goals – anything else may be a distraction. Simon Taufel

Feedback Depending on your goals / objectives, the timing of constructive feedback may be critical. Get it before your next training session or match if possible. Short term goals require more timely feedback in order to better monitor progress. What feedback do I keep and what should I throw away? Simon Taufel

Feedback Some tips… Look at the source…is it credible?
What is the message…does it make sense? Is it applicable to you? What was the motivation in providing feedback to you? Is the person really trying to help you? Simon Taufel

Feedback How do I use “good” feedback?
Can I get more information to better understand the comment or what it means? (eg. Video, other people). What contributed to this happening? How could I fix the problem? Write some thoughts / action plan / goal. Test your response of feedback with Coach or trusted person for their opinion. Make a commitment to doing something positive. Simon Taufel

Self Assessment What are the critical elements to Self Assessment?
1. Honesty 2. Completeness of “brain dump” 3. Relevance to your goals 4. Timeliness 5. Comparison with feedback 6. Comparison / update with goals 7. Discipline (always do one and refer back to it) Practice self assessment routine after every match – will assist with match “closure”. Simon Taufel

Take time out to develop a season plan. Ask yourself the following – Where am I now? (Strengths / weaknesses) Where do I want to get to? (Goals – short term and long term) How will I get there? (Short term goals and planning) Simon Taufel
