2 It’s 1700 and we are in England…
Listen carefully as we read background to our game. Think about: What people do for a living How people live The different classes in our village Over the next 100 years, we are going to experience a major revolution!!!

3 Preparing for the Game Draw:
A river across your paper connecting east to west, the river should be about 1 inch wide Draw a simple wooden bridge across the river Draw two roads (one north/south which goes across the bridge, one east/west) Mark off a portion of your lands for the commons (land that can be used by all in the village) Draw 10 houses. Draw 1 church, 1 cemetery, 1 store, 1 pub, 1 coal mine, and at least 50 trees!!!

5 Round One– 1745 Since you invested your money, thereby making a tidy profit, build yourself 1 nice home anywhere on the map Build the canal (it must run parallel to the water)

6 Round Two– 1750 Add 5 houses (total 15 regular & 1 nice)

7 Round Three– 1760 Take away ½ your commons (fence ½ the commons)
Add 1 more nice house Add 5 regular houses Total: 20 regular houses; 2 nice houses

8 Round Four– 1773 Add 1 factory Add 5 houses for new workers
Factory must be on the river bank Canal water does NOT move fast enough to power the factory machines Do NOT add smoke to this factory! Add 5 houses for new workers Total: 25 houses; 1 factory

9 Round Five– 1774 Add 15 houses 1 church 1 pub 1 store
You may draw additional roads and 1 more bridge Total: 40 houses; 2 churches; 2 pubs; 2 stores; 2 bridges

10 Round Six– 1774 (still) Add 5 new factories --on the river as they are water powered—NO SMOKE 5 houses Total: 6 factories on the river (water powered); 45 regular houses

11 Round Seven– 1780 Add 5 tenements

12 Round 8– 1781 Add 1 store 1 pub 1 church
1 school (for boys of families wealthy enough to send kids to school) Workers work 6 days a week and Sundays are the only day of rest. People flock to churches– make them convenient for the tired feet of the workers Total: 3 stores; 3 churches; 3 pubs; 1 school

13 Round 9– 1782 Add 5 more pubs DESTROY 5 Houses Add 4 tenements
What is happening to the standard of living? Why? Total: 40 houses; 8 pubs; 9 tenements

14 Round 10– 1783 Add 2 special homes (better than your “nice homes”)
Add 1 more factory Add 15 houses for management personnel From the point forward you may remove trees IF you need for development Total: 55 houses; 4 special homes; 7 factories

15 Round 11– 1785 Add 10 factories with smoke
Add smoke to all pre-existing factories Add 5 houses Add 1 tenement Also, add 1 more nice house Total: 60 houses; 17 factories; 10 tenements; 5 nice houses

16 Round 12– 1800 Add 1 new coal mine
Add 1 new iron bridge to replace the old wooden one Add 5 more house Total: 65 houses; 3 coal mines; iron bridge

17 Round 13– 1815 Draw 1 cemetery Add 1 Coal mine
Total: 2 cemeteries, 3 coal mines

18 Round 14– 1820 Add 1 major railroad connecting your factories to your coal mines The railroad should be one continuous line Draw one railroad station on the railroad line You may draw additional bridges if necessary (no more than 2) Add 5 more houses for railroad workers Total: 70 houses; 1 RR; up to 4 bridges total

19 Round 15– 1827 Add 1 jail Add 2 pubs Add 2 tenements
Total: 1 jail; 10 pubs; 12 tenements

20 Round 16– 1838 Add 2 hospitals 1 more cemetery
Total: 3 cemeteries; 2 hospitals

21 Round 17– 1840 Add 1 more railroad line passing east to west through your town—this is a passenger RR Add 1 more railroad station 5 houses 1 tenement Total: 75 houses; 2 railroads; 13 tenements

22 Round 18– 1842 Add 1 theater Add 1 museum
Add 2 private schools (put a “P” on the school) Add 1 nice house Total: 6 nice houses; 3 schools

23 Round 20– 1845 Add 1 cemetery Add 1 jail
1 hospital to accommodate the victims of urban life Total: 3 hospitals; 4 cemeteries; 2 jails

24 Round 21– 1850 Add 20 houses 5 tenements 2 stores 1 church 5 factories
1 pub 1 more nice house 1city hall Total: 95 houses; 17 tenements; 5 stores; 4 churches; 22 factories; 11 pubs; 8 nice houses; 1 city hall
