Rape as an Act of War By Mary Skinner History of Genocides

3

4 Why is rape used as an act of genocidal war?

5 The Reasons Wartime rape is dehumanizing, violent, can be fatal, and seeks to destroy lives. Rape is often used as a bonding experience for new soldiers. Rape blurs ethnic lines and creates disharmony within victimized communities.

6 Chinese Nationalist and Communist parties were at war
China was internally weakened Japan wanted Chinese resources Using Manchuria, Japan gradually took over northern China The Rape of Nanking

7 Shanghai The Chinese held the Japanese off for three months
The Battle of Shanghai gave China enough time to move its industries farther inland

8 The Japanese Arrival In Nanking
They arrived on December 9, 1937 They gave Nanking 24 hours to surrender After 25 hours, they attacked from all sides On December 12, the losing Chinese soldiers retreated On December 13, the Japanese entered the city

9 After the Fall The Battle of Nanking ended in a massacre.
For the following six weeks, the Japanese rained terror down upon Nanking. There were uncountable cases of arson, looting, theft, murder, rape, and sexual violence.

10 How does The Battle of Nanking demonstrate the utilities of weaponized rape?

11 Rape is violent and can be fatal
Rape is about domination and power Rape survivors can suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, STD’s, and more 20, ,000 women were raped in Nanking The rapes were systematic

12 The Women More than 1000 cases per day Captured from their homes
Individuals were allotted to Japanese soldiers at a time for sex Had objects rammed into them Sliced apart Left for dead

13 2. Sexual violence can be a military initiation rite
Official stance was prohibitive The Japanese were groomed to feel superior The soldiers were made to feel like they could have anything or anyone they wanted By raping together as a unit, the soldiers were bonded together

14 3. Rape is a forceful means of impregnation
Rape blurs ethnic and gender lines The babies born from rape are a source of shame for their families The children of rape were often killed or abandoned Expectant mothers killed themselves rather than live with their shame As of 2012, no women had admitted to bearing half-Japanese children as a result of the rapes

16 “This is not rape out of control. It is rape under control
“This is not rape out of control. It is rape under control. It is also rape unto death, rape as massacre, rape to kill and to make the victims wish they were dead. It is rape as an act of forced exile, rape to make you leave your home and never want to go back. It is rape to be seen and heard and watched and told to others: rape as spectacle. It is rape to drive a wedge through a community, to shatter a society, to destroy a people. It is rape as genocide.” - Catherine MacKinnon
