Strong central government Protection from foreign countries Maintain order, regulate trade, ensure nation’s debt is met, coin money Guarantee all citizen’s rights

3 Who were the Anti-Federalists?
Feared a strong central government would endanger personal liberties Distance too far from citizens Feared “necessary and proper” allowed too much power

Did not need it Patrick Henry Checks and Balances

5 The Federalist Papers John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, & James Madison
Pro Constitution papers / collection Argued that the Constitution would protect EVERY citizen’s liberty Spoke of the Spain, England and France threat!!!

6 Ratification June 1788 -New Hampshire- 9th State
Needed NY and VA votes(40% of the POP) December 15, 1790-All states ratified Only now are we united under ONE NATION

7 What Took Place? Washington and Franklin big supporters and they were popular! Compromise-Federalists compromised added the Bill of Rights The Federalists Papers really swung support for a strong central government
