Stages Look for the positives and negatives to your thesis. Make a list. When writing your counter-argument. Pick the one or two strongest points. Each of these counter-arguments must be refuted or countered in a process of conceding some ground, saying they are true but that your arguments are better, or stating they are false for the reasons given. Counterargument in an essay has two stages: you turn against your argument to challenge it and then you turn back to re-affirm it. Start your paragraph with signposting that this is the counter-argument. On the other hand, Alternatively, Although, One might object here that... or It might seem that... or It's true that... or Admittedly,... or Of course,... (OR a question) 2. Give a couple of sentences explaining the other side. Don’t be too brief. Concede or give merit where necessary. 3. Your return to your own argument—which you announce with a but, yet, however, nevertheless or still. 4. Clearly argue each point and refute the other side with logical points which are backed up by your essay or new examples / evidence that you cite.
