Cancer Images Database (caIMAGE)
Sohaib Waheed Georgia Institute of Technology June 29, 2006
2
What is caIMAGE ? an image portal/server
developed by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) allows researchers to search and submit images with annotations a public service to foster the rapid dissemination of information
3
You may not, however, caIMAGE You can browse distribute download
use the data for noncommercial, scientific, and educational purposes You may not, however, distribute modify re-use re-post any materials for public or commercial purposes
4
caIMAGE – The portal Search Submit
5
caIMAGE - Searching The Simple Search Search parameters: Species
Organ/tissue Diagnosis
6
caIMAGE - Searching Species
From the drop down menu choose one of the following species Dog Human Macaca mulatta (Rhesus monkey) Mouse Rat Tamarin (South american monkey)
7
caIMAGE - Searching Organ/Tissue
After selecting your species you can refine your search by selecting organ or tissue. This opens a new window in which you can search by Word/phrase Data tree
8
Searching - caIMAGE Diagnosis
You can further refine you search by selecting diagnosis for your organ/tissue Again you can search the diagnosis by both Word/phrase Data tree
9
caIMAGE – Search Results
Images and the relevant data with annotations Image annotations may include detailed description species gender organ diagnosis staining image dimension
10
caIMAGE - Images Voila !!! Image displayed in a popup window which has zooming and panning capabilities You can download them by right click save target as
11
caIMAGE – Advanced Search
Additional search tabs By image Image name / number Staining Specimen With additional tabs like gender and mouse strain Submitter PI’s name Institute name
12
caIMAGE – Image submission
Users may post images on the caIMAGE server The images may already be published or public All unpublished data is subject to copyright provisions
13
caIMAGE – Image submission
Before submitting you need to certify that you are the author of the data certify that the data was generated in your lab certify that you have consulted with your institution’s technology development office authorize the release of data
14
caIMAGE - Image submission
Guided online tutorial for image submission Live demonstration
15
caIMAGE – Technical Details
The NCICB is investigating imaging technologies to facilitate efficient image retrieval and annotation integration Imaging technologies include JPEG 2000 DICOM 3 (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) Standard for the transferal of radiology images and other medical information Image Content Servers provide a mechanism to speed image transmission and improve image quality
16
caIMAGE – Technical Details
To facilitate image sharing, a “minimal” set of image annotations are necessary caIMAGE utilizes now anatomy and disease vocabularies served by the NCI Thesaurus Image annotations should leverage existing standards and may be derived from used cases for image retrieval and analysis
17
caIMAGE - Architecture
