EQ: How can I use strategies to gather information and demonstrate my understanding?

K-W-L chart A K-W-L chart tracks what a student knows (K), wants to know (W), and has learned (L) about a topic. It can be used before, during, and after research or reading texts. Ex. Create a K-W-L chart and add what you know and want to know about the brain. View the following video, and as you do add anything you learned watching the video. video “Growing the Mind if you have questions about the brain as a result of the video, add them to the W column of your k-w-l chart

SQ5R Survey: look over the text before you read it
Question: Write each subheading in the form of a question next to the suheading Read: read the text one section at a time. For each section Record: underline/highlight the key points and main ideas Recite: say to yourself what you marked in the text and your summary notes from the margins Review: go back over important details Reflect: think of how the information can be applied for additional information

SQ5R (continued) Practice the reading strategy using “The Brain” article from readworks.org blob: Survey Highlight the title of the article from ReadWorks. Put a box around each charts, diagrams, pictures,etc. Question For any headings/subheadings, turn them into a question. Write your question in the margin beside the heading or subheading Read Scan (do a quick read) through the article, and circle any words that you don’t know from the text

SQ5R (continued) The rest of the R’s Record Recite Review Reflect
Highlight/underline the main ideas of the text Recite Write answers to your questions in the margins Review Add to the K-W-L chart things you have learned about the brain from the article in the L section of the chart. Reflect Write 5 questions using level 2 and 3 words from Costa’s levels of questioning (see binder pages) and answer them citing the paragraph where the answer was found.
