3 The Karankawa The Karankawa were hunter-gatherers
who specialized in fishing. What region did they live in? The Karankawa Caddo Indians Galveston Island Gulf o’ Mexico

4 Karankawa Fast Facts Very tall for the time period: many were 6 feet or more I am Big Moak, the Karankawa. Lived in bands of 30; whole families packed into one canoe with their stuff whenever they moved to a new location Nomads: followed the food

5 Stay away from my daddy’s canoe!
Karankawa Food Karankawa were hunter-gatherers. In the cool months they ate fish along the coast. In the hot months, they hunted deer, small animals, and ate nuts, berries, etc. Canoes were their most important tools- they used them for fishing and transportation. Stay away from my daddy’s canoe!

they used to catch marine creatures. They ate a lot of oysters and clams.

I’m a wikiup: a light, portable house. Why did the K Indians need light, portable houses? hee-hee Karankawa bands had two chiefs: One ran the business of the tribe, the other was in charge during times of war. Dogs: Karankawa means “dog lovers”. Piles of oyster shells. This is one way that scientists in modern times find ancient K campsites. Be on the lookout for canoe thieves...

Karankawa loved their children, and spoiled them! The Karankawa also made necklaces of shells and lots of pottery.

Most Remembered For: Being tall, being cannibals (even though they rarely actually ate people), being the first tribe that explorers met The Karankawa Food: Fish, oysters, clams, deer, rabbits, roots, berries, nuts, other Indians.
