3 OLD NEW In EPISD, we are moving to replace our old paper textbooks with new digital ones. That means that your laptop IS your textbook for many classes. The rules that apply to textbooks pretty much apply to your laptop: Lose it, misuse it, break it, and you will have to pay for a replacement. You can access your digital texts with pretty much any device, including your smartphones. Be smart: Take care of your laptop.

4 It wont Turn on! Now what? There is a chance that your laptop has lost it's charge. To fix this problem, plug your laptop in to power and wait a few (3-5) minutes. If after a few minutes it still will not boot up, return for replacement. Student laptops will probably be low on battery charge. Have them plug them in for five minutes to get a small enough charge to get going at least to log onto the network and get into Office 365.

5 Video: Intro to Laptops
Play the video: Intro to Laptops. This video gives an overview of the laptops the student have just received. The video is 3:17 in length. Ask students if they have any questions about the laptop itself.

6 Laptop Reminders This laptop is assigned specifically to you.
You will have it for the rest of your high school career. Come to school with it fully charged each day. You are responsible for the laptop. Don't leave unattended. Do not loan your laptop to anyone. Remember that everything you do online is recorded. Remember the" Grandma Rule" Remind students that the laptops that they are being issued do not belong to them, much like a textbook does not belong to them. They are, however, responsible for the device, They will have this exact same device for four years so they really need to take care of it. When they are online with these devices, they represent EPISD. All of their online activity is being monitored and all websites they visit are being recorded.  Remind them of the Grandma Rule: If you would not say it that way in front of your grandma, do not say it that way online.

7 Laptop Reminders This laptop is monitored, even when you are away from the EPISD network. If you lose or break your laptop, you will receive a replacement which may or may not be the same model. When using your laptop, put your cell phones in "Airplane Mode" to help save campus bandwidth. When not using your laptop, place it in "Airplane Mode" to save campus bandwidth. The Airplane mode can help with the bandwidth. If the network is slow, then disconnecting devices from the network will help.  Both smartphones and this laptop have that mode which disconnects it form the network. Students can still use programs on their laptop that do not require the network when they are in "AirPlane" mode

8 Laptop Reminders Every time you close your laptop, you will be required to log back onto the network episd-secure. The laptop requires that every time you log off and on the internet (closing the laptop) you need to log back onto the network.

9 Student now will be working in Office 365.
It is very important that they follow the steps exactly once they log in. Teachers should have access to their students login passwords and usernames. Students use the same Office 365 log in username and password for both their computer and their 365 accounts.  Also, see the handout for teachers.  Make sure that students only receive their log in credentials.

10 Follow the direction carefully to log in to 365
Once you log in, click on OneDrive FIRST! Once students log into office 365 from Portal.office. com they need to set up the ONEDrive before using any other of the services.
