Earth-Sun Relations and Physical Processes
2
The Earth rotates, or spins, from West to East and this is why we see the sun rise in the East and set in the West. The Earth rotates, or spins, from West to East and this is why we see the sun rise in the East and set in the West. 2
3
Result of this rotation is Night and Day.
4
– The Earth revolves around the Sun. This takes 365.25 days
It makes one complete revolution every days. Our 365 day year is based on the revolution of the Earth around the Sun. – The Earth revolves around the Sun. This takes days – The Earth revolves around the Sun. This takes days – The Earth revolves around the Sun. This takes days 4

You may have noticed that this is not the case...
Tilt Earths Axis The Earth’s Axis is not parallel to the Sun’s Rays. If it were, every day would have as many hours of daylight as darkness. You may have noticed that this is not the case... Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth’s axis as it revolves around the sun. 5

more direct sunlight than others.
Seasons – As the Earth Revolves around the Sun, its Tilt causes some areas to receive more direct sunlight than others. 6
7
When the Sun’s rays are directed towards the Southern Hemisphere, it is Summer in the South Latitudes while the Northern Hemisphere experiences Winter. 7
8
Important terms: Desalinization, headwaters, tributary, watershed (drainage basin), wetlands, water table 8

Erosion=involves movement
11
Weathering=one place Chemical vs. Mechanical
No movement is involved in weathering. -Chemical weathering involves a chemical change in at least some of the minerals within a rock. -Mechanical weathering involves physically breaking rocks into fragments without changing the chemical make-up of the minerals within it.
12
Theory that explains how forces within the planet create landforms.
Plate Tectonics: Theory that explains how forces within the planet create landforms. Plates move along the upper mantle. The process by which this takes place is usually referred to as continental drift 12
13
Two Types of Crust: Oceanic Crust Continental Crust
Oceanic Crust is thinner and more dense than continental crust. It is also more active. 13
14

15
Most occur along fault lines
Caused by separation, colliding, subduction or transformation of plates Most occur along fault lines Earthquakes can cause tsunami’s or giant waves that can travel across the ocean and cause loss of life and property to many people Caused by separation, colliding, subduction or transformation of plates Most occur along fault lines Earthquakes can cause tsunami’s or giant waves that can travel across the ocean and cause loss of life and property to many people 15
16
Hot magma, gases and water pour out of an opening in the earth's crust, usually on a plate boundary.
Most well known islands formed by volcano eruption is the Hawaiian Islands 16
