Quick write (use the back of your “Culture” definition handout): What does “culture” mean to you? What culture(s) do you consider yourself to be a part of? If you could explain one important thing about your culture, what would it be and why?

“Body Ritual Among the Nacirema”
As we read, underline anything that tells you about the Nacirema culture. Anthropology: The study of humankind; the study of human societies and cultures Who are the Nacirema? (We can stop reading when someone figures it out!)

Your Turn With a partner, think of your own “ritual” that might seem strange to an outside observer. Work together to create a description of the cultural practice from the point of view of someone from another planet. Examples: A soccer game, Thanksgiving dinner, playing video games, anything cell phone related, a quinceñera, wedding, funeral, etc.
