WP3 Harmonization of terminologies: use of ITC codes whenever possible
Identity of genotypes: genotype the lines with SSR markers at IEB, starting with the parents Confirm the pedigree of the hybrids in the mapping populations with SSR markers (IEB) Updated each other on the progress with phenotyping
2
WP3 Foc. Resistance region to race 4, subtropical race 4 and also confirmed from a few genotypes for race 1 From 33 genes to 15 genes PCR-based marker identified associated with the trait Been identified in one genotype of malaccensis (2x) Needs to be confirmed in other sub Spp. and ploidy levels A BAC library to be built Resistance haplotype could be checked in the Malaccensis material used in breeding.
3
How can WP3 serve WP1? Many mapping studies on shelves Choice of VCG for Foc race 1: Screening will be done using the most abundant VCG in Ug and Tz. Parents of the mapping populations used in breeding? Most of them yes (eg. Malaccensis, Zebrina GF, Calcutta 4) Where they are not used, at least one of them is Susceptibility in the used parent: recombination in the hybrids could result in hybrids with the desired trait in the background of the used parent.
4
QTL mapping for BS Contrasting parents identified But no segregation
Populations to be checked again in this rainy season If no segregation, crosses to be made
5
Genomic selection Reliability of the models: recommended to bring in a GS expert to evaluate what has been done and recommend on the way forward Prediction with mixed ploidy levels: should we do GS on diploids? GS useful but it comes with a genotyping burden Should we use GS to select for new parents or to select for potential varieties Conclusion: the current models need to be validated to understand their worth
6
Communication Skyping not possible E-mails convenient
Technical questions to be discussed in small groups Answers to questions to be addressed specifically to individuals with a deadline Regular schedule with the entire group to update each other on progress: quaterly WP leader to take the lead Always involve the SAC member (Steve Rounsley) Sharing information within WP and between WPs
7
Undiscussed topics Phenotyping in Arusha by Mohamed: WP3, WP2, WP1
Use of farmer’s traits in the training population: WP3 and WP1
