The five things you should consider about safety while in the classroom include: General Glassware Chemicals Hot Plates & Bunsen Burners Electrical Equipment

General Always work under supervision Make sure you know the procedure Make sure you know how to use your lab equipment Always use proper PPE (eyewear, gloves, ect) (PPE = personal protective equipment) Loose clothing, hair, sandals = DANGER! Food or drinks are no good! Horseplay = VERY dangerous! Emergency Equipment – Know it!

Glassware Never use broken or chipped glassware Clean glassware Designated disposal

Chemicals Wash immediately if you come in contact Do not rub eyes !!!! Waft to smell a substance Containers away and down when pouring Do not put pens in mouth Sinks – keep clean and ask the teacher about chemical disposal Clean up instructions

Hot Plates and Bunsen Burners Handle objects carefully – Hot can look cool Tie back hair and long sleeves Never leave a flame unattended

Electrical Equipment Hands are dry when touching cords/outlets/sockets Pull the plug not the cord Report frayed cords

Information System (WHMIS) A method of ensuring everyone has access to appropriate safety information about any substance they may encounter that is manufactured or sold
