1 Chapter 3 Lesson Three Page 71
The Circulatory System

2 Your Heart and Blood Vessels
The circulatory system ______________________ __________________________________________ circulatory system The group of organs and tissues that act as transfer stations carrying needed materials to cells and removing their waste products The circulatory system is also called the cardiovascular system. Cardio refers to the heart, and vascular refers to the blood vessels.

3 Your Heart and Blood Vessels
The heart pumps blood around the body through a network of _________, ______, and ____________. arteries Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to various parts of the body The heart is a special muscle that serves as the center of the circulatory system. The network of blood vessels in the body is over 80,000 miles long. veins Blood vessels that carry blood from all parts of the body back to the heart capillaries Tiny blood vessels that carry blood to and from almost all body cells and connect arteries and veins

4 The Process of Circulation
The process of circulation involves ________________ and ______________________. pulmonary circulation When blood travels from the heart, through the lungs, and back to the heart Pulmonary circulation: The word pulmonary refers to the lungs. When blood travels this path, it gets rid of carbon dioxide and fills up with oxygen. Systemic circulation: The oxygen-rich blood also delivers other nutrients to the cells and picks up waste products. systemic circulation When oxygen-rich blood travels to all body tissues except the lungs

6 A certain amount of ________________is needed to make blood circulate.
Blood Pressure A certain amount of ________________is needed to make blood circulate. blood pressure The force of blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels

7 _______________________
Blood Pressure _______________________ The first is systolic pressure and the second is diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure: When the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. Diastolic pressure: When the heart relaxes to refill with blood.

8 What Makes Up Your Blood?
Blood is made up of ___________, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. plasma The yellowish, watery part of blood Plasma makes up over half the volume of blood.

9 Red blood cells are one of four types: _____________________________
Blood Types Red blood cells are one of four types: _____________________________ Most people’s blood contains a substance called an Rh factor, a type of protein. Knowing what blood type you have is important for a person who may need blood from a donor during surgery. Some blood types are compatible and others are not compatible. People who have an Rh-factor in their blood are called Rh-positive. Rh negative people do not have this substance in their blood. Rh-negative people can only receive blood donations from people who are Rh-negative. Rh-positive people can receive blood donations from either Rh-positive or Rh-negative donors.

10 Blood Types and Compatibility

11 Caring for Your Circulatory System
Tips for Caring for Your Circulatory System ________________________________________ Follow a balanced food plan that is low in fats. Aerobic Activity Improves cardiovascular endurance, which helps the circulatory system Increases the heart’s capacity to pump blood Muscles receive more oxygen Lessens fatty buildup in arteries Helps achieve a healthy weight, which means the heart doesn’t have to work too hard Manage Stress Stress can strain the heart and blood vessels Avoid Tobacco Tobacco narrows the blood vessels, cutting down the oxygen supply Develop strategies for managing stress. ________________________________________
