Human Body Systems Unit
Students learn that all organisms obtain energy, get rid of wastes, grow, and reproduce. Students will learn the major functions of human body systems such as the ability of the integumentary system to protect against infection, injury, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation; regulate body temperature; and remove waste. Students extend their understanding of structures in living systems from a previous focus on external structures to an understanding of internal structures and functions within living things. Force, motion, and energy are observed in living systems and the environment in several ways.

Agenda: September 20, Set up new Table of Contents – Human Body 2. Warm Ups 3. Notes: Human Body Systems Objective: You will be able to identify the main functions of the system of the human organism, including the circulatory and respiratory systems. Warm Ups What system pumps blood through your body? What system transports air to your blood? Fun Fact: Your heart pumps about 4,000 gallons of blood each day!

Agenda: September 21, 2015 1. Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 21, Warm Ups 2. Notes: Circulatory System/Flow of Blood Objective: You will be able to identify the main functions of the system of the human organism, including the circulatory and respiratory systems. Warm Ups What organ system breaks down food for energy so other systems can use it? What system removes waste from your body? Fun Fact: An average human’s heart beats 30 million times per year

Agenda: September 22, 2016 1. Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 22, Warm Ups 2. Trip Around the Circulatory System Objective: You will be able to identify the main functions of the system of the human organism, including the circulatory and respiratory systems. Warm Ups _______________ carry blood away from the heart. _______________carry blood toward the heart. What links arteries and veins? Fun Fact: The sound of a heartbeat is created by the valves in the heart closing as they push blood through its chambers.

Agenda: September 23, 2016 1Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 23, Warm Ups 2. Colors of the Heart Objective: You will be able to identify the main parts of the heart and how blood flows in the heart. Warm Ups ______ blood cells contain hemoglobin and carry oxygen to the cells. ______ blood cells fight infection. _______ cause blood to clot. Fun Fact: There are about 62,000 miles of blood vessels in the body. Equivalent to 2.5 times around the world.

What is the main function of the circulatory system?
Agenda: September 26, Warm Ups 2. Investigating Heart Rates Objective: You will be able to compare how embarrassment effects boys vs girl’s heartrates. Warm Ups What is the main function of the circulatory system? What is the main function of the respiratory system? How can you compare the function of circulation and respiration within an organism with that of a cell?

Agenda: September 27, 2016 1. Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 27, Warm Ups 2. Go With the Flow Objective: You will be able label the parts of the heart and show how blood flows through the heart. Warm Ups What are the smallest blood vessels? Which organ provides the force needed to move blood through the body? Which muscle helps you breath? Fun Fact: One cigarette shortens your life by 14 minutes

Agenda: September 28, 2016 1. Warm Ups 2. Lung Model Demo 3
Agenda: September 28, Warm Ups 2. Lung Model Demo 3. Notes: Respiration Objective: You will be able to identify the main functions of the respiratory system.. Warm Ups Respiration is the entire process that allows the body to produce ___________. _____ is the connective tissue made of plasma, white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Fun Fact: The air from a sneeze travels at almost 100 mph

Agenda: September 29, 2016 1. Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 29, Warm Ups 2. Blow it Up Lab Objective: You will be able to determine your lung capacity (how much air your lungs can hold) Warm ups Which side of your heart is oxygen rich? Which side is oxygen poor? Which side of the heart pumps blood to the body? Fun Fact: An average college male’s heartbeat is 72 beats per minute, while highly trained athletes can have a resting heart rate of beats per minute.

Agenda: September 30, 2016 1. Warm Ups 2
Agenda: September 30, Warm Ups 2. Review for Test Objective: You will be able to identify the main functions of the respiratory system.. Warm Ups 1. _____ respiration occurs in a cell to break down food and turn it into energy. 2. In which organelle does cellular respiration take place? Fun Fact: Calories burn fastest when exercise occurs within 3 hours of a meal.
