Matter and Change Chapter 1
2
Matter Anything that has mass or takes up space Measuring matter
Mass- is the amount of matter
3
Building blocks of matter
Atom- the smallest unit of matter Substances Element- cannot be broken down Compound- made up of two or more elements
4
Properties of Matter Physical properties- can be observed or measured without changing the substance Chemical properties- the ability for the substance to undergo change
5
Changing Matter Physical change- does not change what the substance is made of States of matter Chemical change- forms a new substance Color change Gas formation Form Precipitant Temperature change
6
Chemical Change/Reaction
Reactants Products Example: H2 + O2 H2O
7
Mixing Matter A mixture is a blend of two or more kinds of matter.
The two substances keep the same chemical identity/properties
8
Types of Mixtures Homogeneous- Same throughout
Heterogeneous- not the same throughout
9
The difference between substances and mixtures
Substances are a fixed ratio of elements Every sample of the substance is exactly the same Mixtures can have any amount of each substance
