Definition A pear shaped sac attached to the posterior surface of the liver by connective tissue Stores and concentrates bile

Parts Fundus Body Neck Hartman’s pouch or infundibulum Cystic duct

Structure Peritoneum covers only the inferior surface Gall bladder is in contact with the posterior surface of the the liver Muscle layer – oblique Mucous membrane – rugae – disappear when full

Blood Supply Cystic artery, a branch of hepatic artery Venous drainage by the cystic vein portal vein Nerve supply Sympathetic nerves fibres from the sympathetic chain in the abdomen Parasympathetic from vagus

Functions of Gall Bladder
Stores bile Secretes mucus Absorbs water – concentrates bile by 10 to 15 times Releases bile when needed Contraction and release of bile stimulated by cholecystokinin from duodenum Presence of fat and acid chyme in the duodenum causes Cholecystokinin to be secreted
