1 Here, There, Everywhere! Transportation of Goods Barbara Kenney Glen Este Middle School, 7th grade Math CEEMS is funded by the National Science Foundation, grant # Big Idea/Challenge Unit Activity Implementation Student Work and Results Big Idea Transportation of Goods Challenge Create a cost efficient and practical route for delivering customer product orders, Student Growth All student groups showed growth on post-test. Day 1: Big Idea, Essential questions, local/global relevance, challenge, and the guiding questions Day 2: Guest Speaker: Total Quality Logistics “Introduction to Logistics” Day 3: Loading a Semi-truck Day 4: “Locker Research", Planning a route Days 5-6: Planning a Locker Company Budget Day 7: Communicating Company Budget to a Finance Company Unit Structure Guiding Questions What product are we transporting? What kind of trucks will we have? What is the weight of the product? What are the dimensions of the product? Where are we transporting the product to? What will be the cost in transporting the product? What are the time constraints for delivering the product? What labor will be needed to transport the product? Standards A.REI.3 Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable, including equations with coefficients represented by letters A.CED.1 Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems. Include equations arising from linear and quadratic functions, and simple rational and exponential functions. A.CED.2 Create equations in two or more variables to represent relationships between quantities; graph equations on coordinate axes with labels and scales. Objective Students will successfully design a transportation route and create a budget for a product based on gas rates, available truck sizes, customer orders, and available drivers. . Student Prototypes Engineering Design Process Application, Career Awareness, and Societal Impact
