Look at the twelve tables located in your binders. Then look at the Bill of Rights provided for you on your desks. Do you see any similarities?

Republic A Form of government in which the people elect their leaders
Representative Democracy The Patricians had to change the government in order to meet the demands of the Plebeians

A government structure that has three parts

Roman Executive Branch
Called the Magistrates (1 year term) Plebeian and Patrician Consuls Shared/ Equal power Judges, tax collectors, games and festivals organizers Ran the city, military and controlled money Had the power to VETO Say no to ideas Helped limit each others power

United States Executive Branch
President and Vice President Commander of Military Veto Power Elected for a 4 year term ( Allowed to serve two terms) Must be 35 year or older and a U.S citizen

Roman Legislative branch
Legislative branch has TWO houses- The Senate and the Assembly Senate (Upper House)- More powerful, 300 Patrician men, proposed laws Elected for life and had to be 18 years or older

Roman Legislative Branch
The Assembly (Lower House) consisted of Patricians and Plebeians- Less powerful than senate Elected the magistrates that ran the city Suggested laws, did not create them Elected for a 1 year term- Unlimited Re-election

United States Legislative Branch
Senate (Upper House) consists of 100 members Proposes laws and controls money Elected to a 6 year term- Unlimited Re-election Must be 30 years of older, a U.S citizen for 9 years and a resident of the state you represent i.e. PA= Patrick Toomey and Robert Casey

United States Legislative Branch
House of Representatives ( Lower House) consists of 435 members Proposes Laws and Controls money Shares Equal power with the Senate Elected for a 2 year term- unlimited re-election Must be 25 years or older, citizen for 7 years and a resident of the state you represent

Roman Judicial Branch Tribunes- elected by Plebeians
Could veto laws and make decisions Protected the rights of Plebeians Served a 1 year term

United States Judicial Branch
Supreme court and the Federal Court System Consists of 9 Justices (judges) Appointed for life by the president Approved by Senate Protects the rights of the citizens (Constitution) Makes sure laws are carried out

Checks and Balances A method to make sure that no part of government becomes more powerful than the other i.e. Veto power Keeps power shared throughout the tripartite system
