1 Jung: Structure of Personality

2 Jung: Structure of Personality
The Psyche or Mind is Composed of Numerous diversified but interacting systems and levels There are three Consciousness Personal Unconscious Collective Unconscious

3

4 Consciousness only part drawn directly by individual
Four functions of Consciousness Thinking, Feeling, Sensing, Intuiting Basic use differs and allows for individual differences in personality Extroversion and Introversion Attitudes that determine the orientation of the couscous mind

5 Consciousness Individualization: The process by which a person becomes an individual and differentiated from others (Socrates: “Know Thyself”)

6 Consciousness The Ego: selects incoming data and brings to conscious that which is in line with our individuation/ self. What is filtered is determined by dominate function – Think, Feel, ect Highly individuated people allow more things to become conscious (Critical Thinkers)

7 Personal Unconscious “Store House of Memory”
Experiences that fail to gain access to consciousness do not disappear. Nothing that is experienced ceases to exists

8 Personal Unconscious Experiences
Memories Once Couscous experiences which have been repressed or disregarded. Ex. Distressed thoughts, unsolved problems, Conflict, Moral Issues Weak experience to weak to reach conscious men. Dream production – store house of things remembered Repressed Conflict

9 Complexes Group of contents group together to form a constellation
Associated groups of feelings, thoughts, memories Word Association Test – Given list of words, some words elect haughty response Caused by unconscious emotion Jung introduced Work Complex to Psychology Very strongly preoccupied by something he can hardly think about anything else inferiority, sex, money, “Hang-up”

10 Review: Ego is the center of Consciousness and personal unconscious is store house of repressed psychic material. Both originate with experience Strictly Environmental Evolution and Heredity provide blueprints for the psyche just as they do for the body. Mind of man is pre figured by evolution and heredity in vehicle. The individual is linked with ancestors

11 Collective Unconscious
Existence of Collective Unconscious is not based on experiences The contents of the Collective Unconscious are not consciously known Predisposition in behavior – Patterns inherited are more likely to manifest

12 Collective Unconscious
Ex. Heart Disease, Cancer, BP Diabetes We easily perceive something’s and react to them in certain ways because the collective unconscious is predisposition to them. Habits become instincts, acquired characters We depend upon the evolution of the brain

13 Archetypes Archetype - is an original model of a person, object, or concept from which similar instances are derived, copied, patterned, or emulated Hero, villain, God, mother, father, man, woman, natural objects – tree, sun, moon, wind, river

14 Archetypes - cont Self - the regulating center of the psyche and facilitator of individuation Shadow - the opposite of the ego image, often containing qualities that the ego does not identify with but possesses nonetheless Anima - the feminine image in a man's psyche Animus - the masculine image in a woman's psyche
