2 Bellringer List the 3 things necessary for a complete sentence.
Complete the following sentences with the correct vocabulary word: Why does the teacher always __ us with constant questions? I really thought your actions were __ when you came to the defence of her in front of so many people. My girlfriend drove her ____ to work because she was upset. Your entire argument is ____ because you have no proof at all! Why do you ____ when there is trouble? You shout stand up and be ___!

3 Parts of the sentence Review:
The subject is the thing or person (etc.) that is going the action or being. The verb is the action or state of being. Jesus wept. I am.

4 Team Action Verb Remember that action verbs are things that you do: eat, sleep, jump, pray. If there are any, the only descriptors that can follow an action verb are direct objects, indirect objects, and object complements. They will not be in prep phrases. ALL OF THESE MUST PASS THE REPLACEMENT TEST!

5 Direct Objects Simply put, direct objects are words that follow an action verb and receive the action. They answer the question “What?” They will not be in prepositional phrases. Formula: S-AV-DO I did my homework. Janet answered the question. Carlos and Megan went to the store. Opening the door, Quinton found the cat and five dollars. After class, the halls were full of students.

6 Indirect Objects Simply put, an indirect object precedes the direct object and receives the direct object in a sentence. It will be a noun or pronoun. FOR THERE TO BE AN INDIRECT OBJECT, THERE MUST BE BOTH AN ACTION VERB AND A DIRECT OBJECT! It answers to question “to whom?” or “to what?” Formula: S-AV-IO-DO She is my friend in New York. I gave my mother and sister some earings. Kevin and Marcy sent the company a check. The policeman gave the ticket to me.

7 Object Complement Simply put, an object complement directly follows a direct object and renames or describes it. It can be a noun or an adjective. FOR THERE TO BE AN OBJECT COMPLEMENT, THERE MUST BE BOTH AN ACTION VERB AND A DIRECT OBJECT. The verbs are usually ones such as “name,” “elect,” “call,” etc. Formula: S-AV-DO-OC She called me ugly. We elected Pete president. The soup is hot. They named the twins Barbara and Becky.

8 Practice Page 540 in your grammar book:
Write the subject (S), Action Verb (AV), any Direct Objects (DO), and any Indirect Objects (IO). Do 1-10

9 Team Linking Verb A Linking Verb is one that shows a state of being. What follows it will come back to rename or describe the subject of the sentence. Note that we use subject pronouns because of this (I, We, He, She). The only things that can follow a linking verb are predicate nouns and predicate adjectives. ALL OF THESE MUST PASS THE REPLACEMENT TEST!

10 Predicate Nouns and Adjectives
Simply put, they are words that follow the linking verb and describe or rename the subject of the sentence. If they rename, they are predicate nouns; if they describe, they are predicate adjectives. Remember that they will not be in Prep Phrases. Formula: S-LV-PA Formula: S-LV-PN My name is Donnie. She will be at the store. I am he. This food was delicious. I walked home. You are a student.

11 Problem ahead. What about this… I tasted the soup yesterday.
The soup tasted great!
