5 How does it impact the United States and American Literature
Enlightenment thinking also leads to the development of Americans and the American character as unique – humanism promotes individuality and equality for all. Enlightenment thinking becomes the basis of the American Revolution – the Declaration of Independence is a rational (scientific) explanation of why the colonies need to be free.

6 Age of Reason - Defined ►Age of Reason: a movement that was marked by an emphasis on rationality rather than tradition, scientific inquiry instead of unquestioning religious dogma, and representative government in place of monarchy. ►Important writers: Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, and any other of the so-called “Founding Fathers.”
